I would like to start mining at a price of $20. I am completely new to the world of mining and I have no idea how to do that, nor am I quite sure if it's possible.
All I can think of doing is I would buy a bunch of coins and then I would sell them for 20. Is there any simpler way to do this?

You can use bitcoin-qt and mine like that (of course, with a short timeframe, and without many "extra" hashes) for a while.
You could also use a pool with more hash power. If you want to make a "long term" investment and can trust the pool, you should probably use a pool instead of solo mining.
(CNN) -- Authorities in northern Ireland are hunting for a man who fired five gunshots into the air and sped off in a stolen car, narrowly missing a woman in a nearby vehicle, police said.
The woman, who wasn't hurt, was driving with her husband and young child on a road in the village of Ballymun, north of Dublin, on Saturday morning. As they drove past the suspect's car, the man opened fire, hitting the roof of the vehicle, the officers said.
He struck the side of a second car before jumping out of his vehicle and running off on foot, the police said.
An ambulance took the woman to a hospital, where she was released Sunday, the police said.
